Photography FAQ

Last week over on our Facebook Page I asked if anyone had questions for me and I received some awesome questions!  Without further adieu- our first round of SFP FAQ!

Q:  How do you get that ‘ring of light’ behind your subject indoors?

A:  That is typically done in post-processing.  I burn the edges a bit to make the subject pop.

Q:  What the easiest way to shoot outdoor shots when the sun is bright?

A:  When I do outdoor sessions, I schedule sessions either early in the morning or late afternoon when the sun isn’t high in the sky.  I love that golden sun that morning/evening produces.  Also finding a nice patch of open shade helps if shooting mid-day.

Q:  How did you balance work and family time when H was younger?

A:  I have been a single mom for the majority of my full-time photography business.  I would shoot sessions while she was at her preschool program (2-3 days per week 9-1) and then after she would go to bed I would stay up late editing and working!  Now that she just finished kindergarten, I have a lot more time during the day to get work accomplished before she gets home. J

Of course, before I went full-time with photography in January of 2009 I was working a 40+ hour week in the investments world (I started my photography business in May ’07) and then would stay up late each night proofing and then shooting the majority on weekends.  It was definitely hard- I’ll admit but I wouldn’t change anything for the world and so happy to be where I am at now.

Q:  What’s the best way to advertise newborn photography?

A:  There are many amazing options out there for you!  For example, I have large framed newborn portraits in my OB/GYN’s exam rooms with my business cards.  What better audience to see your work? J Also Facebook is a huge source of advertising and networking!

Q:  Do you ever do workshops?

A:  Yes!  We do at least one group newborn workshop per year and offer one-on-one mentoring sessions (newborn or other) throughout the year.

Q:  How do u soften their faces?

A:  I use portraiture at a very low opacity.

Q:  How many images on average do you edit out in a family session? About how long does it take to edit a session, and what do you tell clients the turnaround time is?

A:  My average family gallery is around 25+ color portraits and also some black and white edits which brings the gallery to around 40-50+.  To edit:  typically 2-3 hours.  Our turnaround time is 2 weeks in normal season and 3 weeks in peak seasons. (late spring/early summer, and late fall)

Q:  What is their favorite ‘go to’ lens?

A:  For indoors I use my Sigma 50mm 1.4 mainly and outdoors my Nikon 85mm 1.4

Q:  What do you edit with? Do you use bought actions or make your own??

A:  I use Photoshop CS3 for editing.  I use just a couple of actions from Totally Rad Actions and Florabella but everything else is just basic edits that I do in Photoshop with curves and levels.

Thanks SO much everyone!  I’ve really enjoyed hearing everyone’s questions and I’d love to do another round soon.  Feel free to comment on this post with your questions or email us at sfphotographystudio@gmail.com and I’ll answer them very soon! xoxo Stephanie
